Is It Compression You’re After?
What is Compression Therapy?
It is applying pressure to help reduce swelling by restricting the flow of blood and other fluids into the connective tissue. Those with a compromised lymphatic system have increased fluid in the tissues which become a swelling or oedema.
Flat Knit or Circular Knit Compression.
Flat-knit Compression. - The compression garment is manufactured as a flat piece of fabric on a knitting machine using straight rows of needles – similar to a jumper.
Circular Compression - Creates multiple loops of yarn, called stitches, in a line or tube. Knitting has multiple active stitches on the needle at one time.
When do I wear Circular Knit Gradient Compression
These garments apply more pressure distally while gradually decreasing pressure as the garment travels up the extremity.
Gradient compression helps encourage and facilitate fluid movement for patients affected by lymphatic and venous disorders.
Great for early stages of lipodema or lymphedema, when swelling is moderate. A circular knit garment is often used for someone who has poor circulation or lymphedema. Off the shelf Circular knit garments are limited to size and requirements, however we have recently engineered compression to stretch to 98cm for top of leg.
Recently more people suffering with Lipodema are getting results with circular knit as it becomes more evolved.
Circular knit compression offers comfort, containment and ideal for first time compression wearing. Circular knit compression is a great place to start for compression without the tears.
When do I wear Flat Knit Compression
Preferred for areas with severe swelling or Lymphedema. Flat knit garments offer the maximum containment in an elastic compression garment. The density of the knit remains consistent throughout the garment. They can accommodate a variety of shapes and sizes. A Stiffer compression garment will better maintain the gap at the skin folds and is less likely to cut into the skin. A general requirement for pre and post surgery.

Medical Research Papers.
Medical research shows that strength of Level 3, 34-46mmHg has proved to be most effective in reducing oedema.
Clinical studies suggest there have been no studies comparing flat-knit and round-knit compression garments for maintenance therapy of lymphedema of the leg. Given differences in the clinical presentation of lymphedema with patient compliance, economic reasons, disease stage it seems doubtful if all patients actually require flat knit compression garments. According to expert opinion, Flat knit fabrics are generally recommended.
